Consciousness

Who are we? Where have we come from? Where are we going? And what must we do to have meaningful survival? These questions, and others, have concerned humans since the beginning of time.

We now have a unique opportunity to re-explore these questions, and to look into a new concept, that we are one, from a deeper perspective. What is this oneness? What would a consciousness of one be like? What would a "OneConsciousness" do for us as a global community?

This Web site will present many resources relating to consciousness. Hopefully it will stimulate your thinking and lead you to your own OneConsciousness.

Consciousness may not require a distinct or substantial self of the traditional Cartesian sort, but at least some degree of perspectivally self-like organization seems essential for the existence of anything that might count as conscious experience. Experiences seem no more able to exist without a self or subject to undergo them than could ocean waves exist without the sea through which they move.[1] Consciousness matters, says Humphrey, "because its function is to matter. It has been designed to create in human beings a Self whose life is worth pursuing.".Even beyond death.[2] Consciousness can be connected with the brain in the given way but itself be entirely non-neural. The same is true if conscious thought and neural process are parts of the same whole.[3]

Consciousness will be a subsection of this state-machine running day-to-day, moment-by-moment thoughts and memory, attentiveness and active sensory and motor control. We change the neural states and assemblies and we change the weightings of synaptic connections and this is going to change the process and pathways of electron flow which modulates the waveform of the system description live, on the fly.[4] Consciousness consists in such global broadcasting and is therefore also, according to Baars, an important functional and biological adaptation. We might say that consciousness is thus created by a kind of global access to select bits of information in the brain and nervous system.[5] Consciousness allows you the capacity to plan. Let?s take a lioness ready to attack an antelope.[6]

Consciousness was the original focus of psychological research and is once more a central topic of enquiry. The growth of interest and research over recent years has been explosive, and to foster this development a new section of the British Psychological Society, the Consciousness and Experiential Psychology Section (CEP) was formed in 1997.[7] Consciousness is sequential, while unconscious thought is largely parallel. Consciousness deals with a small number of items, while unconscious thought is massive, teeming, statistical.[8] Consciousness is thus related by Nietzsche to the classic philosopheme of recognition which, according to him, defines knowledge . [9]

Consciousness Studies is a featured book on Wikibooks because it contains substantial content, it is well-formatted, and the Wikibooks community has decided to feature it on the main page or in other places. Please continue to improve it and thanks for the great work so far![10] Consciousness approaches society from another world and leads it from. The utopians are prevented by the undeveloped nature of the proletarian movement from seeing the true bearer of historical movement in history itself, in the way the proletariat organises itself as a class and, hence, in the class consciousness of the proletariat.[11] Consciousness) of the Phenomenology of Spirit exhibit the shapes of the philosophical consciousness from the Presocratics to Kant (the last major thinker before Hegel). The first 3 chapters are very much concerned with the psychology of pure mind (that is, with cognition and epistemology).[12]

Consciousness has a creative, productive, generative role in the world such that what we wish for is more likely to be than if we hadn't wished for it. We have good evidence that this is true.[13] Consciousness at this level becomes capable of magical powers, defying accepted scientific physical laws and giving us a glimpse of probable future developments in, among other things, quantum physics. [14] Consciousness, then, is enriched by visual attention, though attention is not essential for visual consciousness to occur (Rock et al. Attention is broadly of two types: bottom-up, caused by the sensory input; and top-down, produced by the planning parts of the brain.[15]

Consciousness-raising was seen as both a method for arriving at the truth and a means for action and organizing. It was a means for the organizers themselves to make an analysis of the situation, and also a means to be used by the people they were organizing and who were in turn organizing more people.[16] Consciousness in animals enables them to relate several different things at once. This is a conception of the self as the experience.[17] Consciousness thus differs from other biological phenomena in that it has a subjective or first-person ontology, but this subjective ontology does not prevent us from having an epistemically objective science of consciousness. We need to overcome the philosophical tradition that treats the mental and the physical as two distinct metaphysical realms.[18]

Phenomenal consciousness (P-consciousness) is simply experience; it is moving, coloured forms, sounds, sensations, emotions and feelings with our bodies and responses at the center. These experiences, considered independently of any impact on behavior, are called qualia .[19] Phenomenally conscious experiences have been argued to be nonphysical or at least inexplicable in the manner of other physical entities. Several such arguments allege that phenomenal experience is ‘subjective’, that under standing some experiences requires under going them (or their components).[20]

Thus, we may become conscious, in a certain situation, of the fact that we are nervous or uncomfortable. We may become conscious of a rising anxiety, or of a sudden cheerfulness.[22] Thus it is a mathematical entity contained in the reflection space hierarchy. In fact the reflection space corresponding to the octehedron is seven-dimensional and is also a superstring-type reflection space, so that a link with the most popular version of unified field theory is provided.[23] Thus, i and ii might be tangled together. No?\74br\76\74br\76Josh: The scientists you are talking about have extra-mentalist aims, with an armchair contribution to those aims.[24]

Thus, it is clear that our thoughts and emotions affect our physical bodies and are at least part of the explanation for the placebo effect. But can purely physical mechanisms also explain cases of healing that involve nonlocality ?[25] Thus the underlying hardware machine can be turned into any of a host of different virtual machines, thanks to the capacity of each node to run its current program. The nodes do not make further use of disk memory, however, during normal operation.[26] Thus, I will only briefly mention a few more. This is a pragmatic choice rather than intended deference to those included.[27]

Human operators would type commands on a keyboard, like "Push the box off the platform.".Shakey would dutifully explore the room until it found the box. Then it would push a ramp up to the platform, roll up on top and shove the box onto the floor.[30] Human resources is next door to material resources. Hospital beds are home to pneumonia, broken arms, colon cancer.[31]

Philosophers have debated the "mind-body problem" and the existence of "free will" for thousands of years. However, never before have we been in a position to examine the brain with such precision.[44] Philosopher Andy Clark will show why arguments for extended cognition do not generalize to arguments for an extended conscious mind. [45]

Indeed, her scans were barely different from those of healthy volunteers. The woman, it appears, had glimmerings of consciousness.[49] Indeed, it is in plain view in every present moment, and yet it remains difficult to see. [50]

Dennett's audacious, tantalizing foray into the mind's inner workings ties up loose ends at the interface of cognitive psychology, artificial intelligence, neuroscience and biology. [61] Dennett's main argument is that the various properties attributed to qualia by philosophers?qualia are supposed to be incorrigible, ineffable, private, directly accessible and so on?are incompatible, so the notion of qualia is incoherent. The non-existence of qualia would mean that there is no hard problem of consciousness , and "philosophical zombies ", which are supposed to act human in every way while somehow lacking qualia, cannot exist.[62]

Yet, it can be challenging to find the part of yourself that is connected to your Divine Source. Sometimes on this inner journey it is helpful to have someone accompany you, especially if you feel confused, lost, stuck, depressed, or hopeless.[65] Yet if consciousness is a trick, then of course this quest is a fool's errand. It will make no more sense to try to explain the existence of qualia than it would to explain the existence of the impossible triangle.[66]
